Acupuncture Services

Acupuncture is one of the oldest known forms of healing, and has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease for over 3,000 years. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional, and lifestyle counseling are used throughout treatment to promote health.

Acupuncture originated in China and is now used worldwide as an effective means of overcoming disease. Acupuncture works using an energetic model of the body where channels of energy known as meridians run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. When there is a disharmony or obstruction of the flow of energy along the meridian this results in pain and/or disease.

Acupuncture relies on the body’s natural ability to self heal by summoning the energetic and curative potential by needling specific acupuncture points. Therefore, acupuncture treatments can correct imbalances and increase the circulation of energy and blood through the meridians promoting health and well being.

What to Expect on your Initial Visit
Please expect your first visit to last approximately 1.5 hours. Upon your arrival to Cheryl’s office you will fill out several forms giving a comprehensive view of your medical history so that a complete assessment of your condition can be made. Next, we will discuss your health history and current complaints, including any Western diagnoses and lab work you may already have, as well as any current pharmaceutical drugs you’re taking. After this you will be taken to a treatment room where you will be asked questions regarding, pain, eating and sleeping habits, your daily activity and other facets of your overall well being. In addition to the interview, a physical examination which includes a tongue and pulse diagnosis will be taken which will allow Cheryl to plan an appropriate treatment plan.

Additional helpful hints for your acupuncture sessions:
– Please wear loose fitting clothes if possible, or bring a change of comfortable clothes with you.
– Make sure that you have had something to eat.
– Avoid brushing your tongue prior to coming to your treatment.

We look forward to seeing you! If you have any questions, please call or email us at any time.

Subsequent Visits
Follow-up appointments last approximately an hour and in addition to acupuncture, they may also include herbal consultation, cupping or use of other Chinese medicinal tools. Together we will set a treatment plan that works best with your health needs and lifestyle.

Common Questions

  • Does acupuncture hurt?
    • No, acupuncture should not hurt. A momentary prick is often felt around the needle as it is inserted, eventually creating a sensation of heaviness, dull pressure or tingling around the area during the treatment. The needles are hair fine. Most people are amazed by how relaxed they feel during and after the treatment. This can only occur if the treatment is comfortable and gentle.
  • Is acupuncture safe?
    • As long as it is performed by a competent practitioner, acupuncture is extremely safe. Side effects and complications are extremely rare. Acupuncturists are required to use disposable needles that are discarded after one use.
  • How many treatments will I need?
    • This is unique to the individual and varies dependent on the disease and its severity, the duration of the illness, and your overall condition. Typically, conditions that have persisted for some time will take longer to respond while acute conditions resolve more quickly. The treatment program is based on the patient and the results obtained in initial visits. For most chronic conditions, 4-6 treatments on a weekly basis tend to offer the best outcome. Some people notice an immediate improvement in their health while for others acupuncture tends to have a cumulative effect over several visits.
  • Does insurance cover acupuncture?
    • Acupuncture Healing and Wellness Center will gladly give you a superbill to submit for insurance reimbursement. There are a few plans that cover acupuncture. The best companies for acupuncture coverage are Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield, and United Healthcare. Be sure to call your insurance provider to verify benefits and to see if they accept superbills.
